The National Tournament is held every year over Labour Weekend and is an official listing on the NZ Hockey Federation calendar of events.

To participate, individuals must be of Māori descent and affiliated with or whakapapa to their representative rohe. This ensures a strong connection to ancestral lands and communities, enhancing cultural understanding and authenticity of the event.

Contact your Rohe Delegate or Kaunihera for information on team trials and registrations. 

PlayHQ will be used for this tournament. All teams are expected to register their players.

Tournament Information

New Zealand Māori Hockey Eligibility Rules

  • All players must be financial within any hockey associations that they play for including NZ Maori Hockey.
  • Participants must be of Māori descent Whakapapa verification form is required as proof of identity.
  • Participation is limited to eligible rohe members or those affiliated with ancestral ties. Permission is required to play for another rohe.
  • Players under the age of 16 will not be eligible for NZMH representative selection.
  • Participants must respect cultural protocol and adhere to New Zealand Māori Hockey Constitution Rules.

Eligible Rohe

The following 8 rohe are based on Māori Land Court boundaries. 

Taitokerau– Northland

Tāmaki Makaurau – Auckland, North Harbour

Waikato-Maniapoto – Waikato-King Country

Waiariki – Wider Bay of Plenty 

Tairāwhiti– East Coast, Wairoa

Tai Uru – Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu, Horowhenua

Tākitimu – Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Wellington

Te Waipounamu – South Island, Tasman Bays, Southland, Otago

Participants are expected to attended the Pōwhiri

The Pōwhiri is a traditional Maori welcoming ceremony that acknowledges the gathering’s significance and officially welcomes all participants. Attendance is considered a sign of respect.

DAY 1  RĀMERE

  • Pōwhiri – 9:30am
  • (Rounds 1 and 2) approx 11.15 am

DAY 2  RĀHOROI

  • (Round 3, 3rd/4th Playoffs, Quarter Finals)
  • AGM – 7:00 pm
 

DAY 3  RĀTAPU

  • (3rd/4th Playoffs, Semi-Finals, Finals)
  • Po Whakangahau (Kia) –  6:30pm
  • Junior Representative Squads Announced
 

DAY 4  RĀHINA

  • (Finals)
  • Prize Giving
  • Senior Representative Squads Announced
  • Closing

TBA NZMH Selectors will be named prior to the tournament. 

  • Players interested in being selected for the New Zealand Maori Hockey (NZMH) representative teams  must register on the team’s form prior to the tournament.
  • Players not able to attend NZMH Tournament but wish to be considered for selection must register their expression of interest via email with the NZMH Secretary no less than 10 working days prior to the tournament.
